Steps from mapping to strategy
Climate and costs must go hand in hand.
Ahlsell delivers to customers all over Norway, with annual sales above NOK 6 billion and a large logistics operation. In autumn 2022 it set out to measure the emissions of its customer transport, with one condition: "Climate and costs must go hand in hand, and customer experiences must get better, not worse," says Vegar Carlson.

The challenge: where to start
A carbon account is only as good as the activities behind it. Ahlsell needed to know which transports it runs, what each one emits, and how this year compares with last year. Reports in Excel and filing cabinets would not tell anyone what to change.

“It is important for us to be able to show our customers that by doing business with Ahlsell, they are choosing an enterprise that takes emission reductions seriously.”
The solution
Three steps:
Mapping the business activities across the supply chain, in meetings and workshops, to build the dataset.
Integrating Ahlsell's existing data flow, for daily insight instead of last year's numbers.
A strategy built on the data: fuller trucks, more consolidation, fewer return transports, fewer wrong deliveries.
The impact
"We can now see all our transport and outgoing logistics in a comprehensive picture, and can view climate emissions down to each individual customer as well as shipment," says Carlson.
Emissions down about 70% in the past year (preliminary internal results), mainly through advanced biofuels and electric power.
Figures that are verifiable and withstand audit.
KPIs set per function, not only one company-wide target.
